Welcome to our blog!

We wanted a good place to share great projects and some of our expertise with our clients and the world at large, so when we put this new site together, it was important to us to include an awesome blog.

I hope you’ll take a moment to check out some of our posts. We can always be reached through the contact info at the bottom of the page, feel free to give us a call with any questions.

Tip of the… Stump?

Mother nature is awesome. We mean that literally– as landscapers, we make a lot of plans. However, as anyone working with earth and plants can tell you, sometimes your plans just don’t match reality.

Failed plans should not be interpreted as a failed vision. Visions don’t change, they are only refined. Plans rarely stay the same, and are scrapped or adjusted as needed. Be stubborn about the vision, but flexible with your plan.

We try to make reasonable recommendations so we can keep a little room in our plans for when a stump comes out of the ground weighing a few thousand pounds more than expected.

We try to give our irrigation clients a window of time  for their sprinkler repairs, because without our x-ray glasses, we don’t know exactly what we’re going to dig up.

Here in Vancouver, we get a lot of mild weather that’s perfect for landscaping construction. But sometimes we get a little rain. We try to be realistic about when we need to let it dry out a little, or when we can just set anchor and get to work.

Even the best plans can be challenged by nature, and what sets a professional landscaper apart from the rest is how those plans are handled when the going gets tough. A contractor should be making your vision a reality, and when you’ve invited us into your home, our plan and ultimate goal is to make you happy to be there.

Low maintenance landscaping doesn’t have to be boring

This was once a heavily sloped yard with a patchy lawn. We transformed it into a simple looking landscape that’s both attractive and low-maintenance.

We did a fair bit of grading work and introduced appealing mix of design elements to this yard. Bark dust is frequently key to building a low-maintenance area without grass, but the charming rock work and pathway add depth and contrast. This is a popular recipe for a yard a homeowner can be proud of without the need to own a lawnmower.

Basalt and Bluestone in Portland, Oregon

Here’s a before and after shot of a recent project we did in one of Portland’s lush old neighborhoods. We brought in hand-cut bluestone blocks to give the space a clean look and a pop of understated color– also they’ll serve to complement future gardening and planting projects.

We even prepared the soil in the surrounding planter space so the homeowner could start on his garden this summer.

We also installed a one-of-a-kind basalt column fire pit to add another unique touch and tie the space together with a functional focal point. As you can see in the detail shot below, each stone is unique– so each pit will have its own personality and distinctive look.
basaltfirepitshotThe natural finish on both the basalt and bluestone complement the classic look of the neighborhood but open up a real opportunity for the homeowner to inject some personality into their space.
