Over 20 Years of Building Great Relationships
(and awesome custom landscapes)

Future-Focused Relationships, One Yard at a Time

Jay knows that relationships and trust are everything, no matter the business sense. His relational approach trickles down to the management teams and then out to the crews in the field, who do the hands on work for clients trimming hedges, laying irrigation line, and building patios. For the entire J’s Custom Landscaping team, digging in the dirt isn’t just a way to make money, it’s a way to connect with people.

Anyone who’s worked with J’s will tell you: they’re focused on service first and foremostThat’s why homeowners, business owners, and property managers consistently choose the experts at J’s Custom Landscaping to build and care for the outdoor spaces that matter most to them.

A 15-year History of Service

In 1999, after spending over three decades with the Forest Service, Jerry Hofer ‘retired’ and started J’s Custom Landscaping. It began with a commercial account here and there and then in 2001 Jay joined his father. Together, they’ve made a formidable pair and share two common goals: To listen to their clients and give them exactly what they want; and to build a company that employees love to work for.

Our team

Every business has a stellar team that holds everything together. Here’s our leadership crew that keeps our responses quick and our service seamless:

Jay Hofer

After graduating from college and working in sales, Jay and his father joined forces to found J’s Custom Landscaping. These days, Jay runs the business and manages sales, landscape construction, and small project teams and also does much of the design and plant selection. He says he “eats, sleeps and breathes landscaping,” but really, it’s the employees and customers that light up his day. He explains, “We go the extra mile — by listening and fact finding — to create landscapes that are beautiful to each client.”

You’ll often see Jay with his phone to his ear, working with a customer or an employee. “I try to be very flexible with our staff.” says Jay, “That earns me a level of loyalty that allows me to ask them to move heaven and earth occasionally to get a project done.” When asked whom he admires most, Jay says without hesitation, “My father, Jerry. He is truly the most genuine and nicest person you will ever meet. He’s willing to give you the shirt off his back.”

When Jay takes a few moments for himself, you can find him wrestling with his kids, barreling down a local trail on his mountain bike or rooting for the Seahawks and the Blazers.

Jerry Hofer

Jerry may have the fancy title of Vice President, but he’s a can-do guy with a heart for helping others and an impressive list of botanical credentials. We’re talking three decades with the Forest Service in the Western U.S., a degree in forest management from Utah State University, an Arborist certification from the International Society of Arboriculture, a commercial herbicide applicator certification, and countless client accolades and relationships built during his 15 years with J’s Custom Landscaping.

Beyond the certifications and kudos, Jerry is a true people person. You might find him shoulder deep in a Japanese maple, but he admits he’s also pretty good at “paying attention, being creative and building trust and a positive relationship with clients.” A man of his word, Jerry guarantees, “We deliver what we say we deliver.”

When not caring for clients, pruning trees or mentoring his employees, Jerry is often found reading, fishing or crabbing with his family, and volunteering for the Clark County Food Bank and his church.

Anthony Preciado

You’ll always find Anthony striving for more, whether he’s answering phones, organizing employees’ workloads, or dreaming up new ways to reach out to customers. He coordinates with our commercial and residential customers, and assists with running our maintenance routes. If you've called J's Custom Landscaping, you have probably already talked to him. Due to his broad perspective, he’s an effective communicator who works well with everyone. A writer in a former life, Anthony holds communication in high regard, both appreciating it from others and dishing it out clearly and cleverly.

When he’s not sketching out a new social media post or providing administrative support to our maintenance crews, you’ll usually find him playing a game of some kind with his friends. Yes, he'd love to hear about your Magic: the Gathering deck ideas.

Nick Hagen

Nick's extensive industry experience and aptitude for creating beautiful landscapes aren't the only things that make him a VIP on the J's team. As Jay himself would put it, “he's a rock star!”

Nick's background spans many sides of the landscaping industry, and he's personally installed just about everything he sells as well. Those experiences influence his recommendations on every project, from extensive custom hardscapes to simple plantings and bark dust refreshes. You could meet with him for just about any kind of project, but he especially likes creating spaces with sitting walls, fire pits, and outdoor structures. “I really like taking a run down property and watching it transform,” he loves “seeing a project turn into a beautiful landscape and seeing the smile on the customer's face.”

When he's not with a customer walking through a new project or helping the crews place plants, Nick loves to hang out and travel with his family, including his adorable 10 month old daughter and his farm animals.
